Swedish texting abbreviations you will actually receive

Learn the short forms Swedes use in texts and group chats, from mvh and osv to e, nån and ses, without turning every message into slang.

The short answer

Swedish messages shorten both formal phrases and everyday speech. Mvh closes a polite message, osv means and so on, pga means because of, and ca means approximately. In casual chats, är may become e, någon becomes nån, något becomes nåt and sedan becomes sen. Read these forms confidently, but copy the register of the person you are writing to: a message to a friend is not a message to a landlord, school or authority.

The abbreviations that appear in practical messages

Several Swedish abbreviations are ordinary rather than trendy. Mvh means med vänliga hälsningar and closes a polite message. Pga means på grund av, osv means och så vidare, ca means cirka, and kl. introduces a time.

You will meet them in appointment reminders, messages from school, housing notices and workplace chats. The surrounding sentence remains standard Swedish, so learning five short forms unlocks far more than memorising a page of internet slang.

Why är becomes e and någon becomes nån

Casual writing often follows spoken Swedish. Är may be written e, det may appear as de, någon becomes nån, något becomes nåt, and sedan becomes sen. These are not forms to use in an application or a formal email, but they are useful to recognise immediately.

Do not assume every de means the pronoun they. In a chat, context may show that the writer meant det. If that distinction is still uncertain, revisit de, dem and dom before trying to imitate informal spelling.

E du hemma? Are you at home?Very casual text spelling of Är du hemma?
Har du nån minut?Do you have a minute?Casual message to somebody you know.
Vi ses sen!See you later! An easy way to end a friendly exchange.

Read the relationship before copying the spelling

A useful rule is to mirror the other person's level of formality. A friend who writes e du på väg? gives you room to answer casually. A school administrator who writes complete sentences and signs Mvh is signalling a more neutral register.

Emoji do not automatically make a message informal. Swedish workplaces often use a smile or thumbs-up while keeping the grammar standard. Keep names, dates, addresses and decisions unshortened whenever misunderstanding would cost time or money.

Jag bekräftar att jag kommer.I confirm that I will come. When the answer needs to be unambiguous.

Practise messages as complete exchanges

Save three real message patterns: confirming a time, saying you are delayed and asking for clarification. Replace only the place and time. This builds reusable Swedish instead of a disconnected abbreviation list.

Use the Swedish phone and technology vocabulary when the message concerns an app or connection problem, and practise the reply aloud with the SvenskaApp tutor. A text still becomes a conversation when the other person calls.

Questions people ask

What does mvh mean in Swedish messages?
Mvh is short for med vänliga hälsningar, meaning kind regards. It is common in polite emails and practical messages.
Why do Swedes write e instead of är?
In very casual chats, spelling sometimes follows pronunciation. E represents är, but it is not appropriate for formal writing.
Is Swedish text slang suitable at work?
Some abbreviations such as ca, pga and osv are neutral. Spoken spellings such as e, nån and nåt are more casual, so follow the register used by your colleague.

Swedish email phrases: what goes between Hej and Mvh

Email is the one place a beginner can produce correct Swedish, because nobody is standing there waiting for the answer. You can look a word up, read it twice and send it anyway.
