The short answer

Swedish verbs take the same form for every person: jag talar, du talar, han talar, vi talar, ni talar, de talar. Which ending you add depends on the verb group. Groups 1 and 3 add -r to the infinitive (tala → talar, bo → bor); groups 2 and 4 drop the infinitive -a and add -er to the stem (läsa → läser, dricka → dricker).

Swedish verbs don't change based on who performs the action, the same form is used for all persons.

Group 1 and group 3 add -r to the infinitive (tala → talar, bo → bor). Groups 2 and 4 drop the infinitive -a and add -er to the stem (läsa → läser, dricka → dricker).

In a sentence

  • jag talar / du talar / vi talar

I speak / you speak / we speak

  • att tala → talar (Group 1)

    to speak → speak(s)

  • att läsa → läser (Group 2)

    to read → read(s)

  • att bo → bor (Group 3)

    to live → live(s)

  • att dricka → dricker (Group 4)

    to drink → drink(s)

What learners get wrong

  • Jag är talar svenska.

    Say instead: Jag talar svenska.

Swedish has no continuous tense. One present form covers both "I speak" and "I am speaking", and adding är makes it ungrammatical.

  • Han talarr / han talas

    Say instead: Han talar

There is no third-person -s in Swedish. The -s ending exists, but it makes the passive (boken läses — the book is read), which is a different thing entirely.

Questions people ask

Do Swedish verbs change with the person?
No. Unlike French, Spanish or German, Swedish uses one form for all six persons in every tense. Learning a verb means learning about four forms in total — infinitive, present, past and supine — not a conjugation table per tense.
How do I say "I am reading" as opposed to "I read"?
Usually with the plain present: jag läser covers both. When the ongoing sense really matters you can say jag håller på att läsa (I am in the middle of reading), or use a position verb — jag sitter och läser, literally I sit and read, which is very common in speech.
What is the difference between group 2 and group 4?
In the present, nothing — both take -er. They part company in the past: group 2 is weak and adds -de or -te (läste), while group 4 is strong and changes its stem vowel (drack). You cannot tell them apart from the present form alone, which is why dictionaries list the past.
