Skatteverket / banken
ID card and BankID
Why almost nothing works without them, and the order they have to be obtained in.
Step 1, free to read
Know why this is the hard step
Sweden runs on an electronic identity. Booking a doctor on 1177, reading a letter from Försäkringskassan, signing a lease, paying with Swish, filing your tax return: each of them asks for BankID. And BankID comes from a bank, which will only issue it to a customer whose identity it has verified with an accepted ID document. That is the loop newcomers get caught in, and it is why this path is about the order rather than about any single office.
- Step 2: Get the personnummer first
- Step 3: Apply for the id-kort in person
- Step 4: Open a bank account
- Step 5: Then, and only then, BankID
