The short answer

Do not learn one hundred isolated infinitives. Keep the infinitive, present, preterite and supine of each Swedish verb together with one personal sentence. Start with twenty verbs for describing an ordinary day, then add movement, opinion, workplace and conversation verbs.

The twenty verbs that carry an ordinary day

Start with vara, ha, göra, komma, gå, vilja, kunna, behöva, säga, veta, tänka, tro, tycka, se, höra, äta, dricka, bo, jobba and lära. They already cover identity, needs, opinions and daily activity.

Use them immediately with Swedish greetings, then save each form in SvenskaApp vocabulary.

Jag behöver hjälp.I need help.
Vad tycker du?What do you think?

Keep the useful forms together

A useful entry is skriva, skriver, skrev, skrivit, not just skriva. Keeping four forms together stops you relearning the same verb at every tense.

Sort regular verbs with the Swedish verb-group exercises, and keep strong verbs in a short separate set.

Add verbs by situation

For movement: åka, köra, stanna, byta, hinna. For work: börja, sluta, skicka, svara, boka. For conversation: fråga, berätta, förklara, förstå, glömma.

Swedish days, months and dates give those verbs a concrete time frame.

A recall test that measures progress

Hide the Swedish column and produce a sentence, then hide the translation and retrieve the meaning. Two-way recall exposes verbs you recognise but still cannot use.

After a week, practise in the SvenskaApp games and keep only the forms that still resist.

Questions people ask

Which Swedish verbs should I learn first?
Start with vara, ha, göra, komma, gå, vilja, kunna, behöva, säga and veta, then add the verbs your own routine needs.
Should I learn the preterite of every Swedish verb?
Yes, together with the present and supine. Forms learned as one set are much easier to retrieve.
How many Swedish verbs should I learn each day?
Five verbs reused in personal sentences are more valuable than a long list that you only reread.
