SFI vs apps for Swedish: a sequence, not a choice

Everyone frames this as one or the other, and the two are not doing the same job. SFI gives you a teacher, a room full of people and an official record of your level. An app gives you a session tomorrow morning, which matters most in the stretch before your place comes through.

The short answer

SFI, Svenska för invandrare, is the adult Swedish course organised by Sweden's municipalities. It gives you two things software cannot: a teacher who hears the mistake you did not know you made and corrects it on the spot, and an official record of the level you reached. An app gives you the one thing SFI cannot: a session tomorrow morning, before you have a place and before you land. So the answer is not one or the other. Start on your own now, keep the daily session running once class begins, and treat the time before SFI as the cheapest study time you will get. Registration goes through your municipality, which decides eligibility and the date you can enter.

What SFI gives you, and no app does

Start with the part that is not up for debate. A qualified teacher in the room with you is still the most effective language technology anyone has built. She hears the vowel you shortened, the word you stressed on the wrong syllable, the sentence that was grammatical and still landed strangely. Then she tells you, out loud, while you can still feel what your mouth did. An app marks your answer right or wrong. That is a different product, not a cheaper version of the same one.

The group is the second thing, and people underrate it until they have sat in one. You will speak in front of adults who are also getting it wrong, which is the only setting where a beginner opens their mouth without first calculating the social cost. It also removes the obstacle the rest of the country puts in your way, because Swedes switch to English the moment you hesitate. Nobody in an SFI classroom switches. That room may be the only place in Sweden where a long pause is allowed to finish.

Third comes the part that no amount of daily practice can substitute for. SFI produces an official record of the level you reached, issued by a school. An app can tell you that you have retrieved twelve hundred words correctly. It cannot hand you anything a third party is willing to act on. If proof of Swedish is going to matter in your working life here, that is where it comes from, and it is the strongest reason to take your place seriously when it arrives.

The four things SFI does not solve

You do not choose your start date. Registration goes through your municipality, which decides eligibility and the date you can enter. That decision is not yours and it is not the internet's either, so treat anyone confidently quoting you a timeline as someone talking about a different municipality. What is yours to decide is what happens between the day you register and the day you walk in.

The timetable was not built around your contract. If you arrived for a job, this is the collision you hit first. Class happens when class happens. Whether your municipality runs anything outside office hours, and on what terms, is a question for your municipality rather than for a forum, and it is worth asking in writing so you have the answer to point at.

The group is not one level. A class is one teacher and a room of adults who arrived from very different places with very different schooling behind them. Someone in the back row is reading a newspaper in their first month. Someone else is learning a new alphabet. A good teacher does remarkable things across that spread, and the spread is still there. Fast learners spend time waiting. Slower ones spend time behind.

Between two classes, nothing happens unless you make it happen. This is the quiet one and it costs the most. The words you met on Tuesday and never pulled back out of memory are largely gone by Thursday, which is how memory works rather than a failure of yours. A course cannot follow you home, and no language has ever been learned only in the hours somebody else scheduled.

Registering: the words on the form

The registration itself is a municipal process, so the vocabulary is municipal vocabulary. Learning six words of it before you start is not a study exercise. It is what lets you read the page you are filling in and understand the reply when it comes, which will be in Swedish more often than the internet suggests.

Two questions are worth having ready in Swedish even if the conversation ends up in English. One is where and how you register. The other is what level you are at, because that is the question you will be asked more than any other in your first year, and the vocabulary in what they actually ask you at Skatteverket overlaps with it more than you would expect.

In Swedish
In SwedishWhat it meansWhen you use it
en anmälana registration, a sign-upThe word on the municipal form and on the page you are looking for. To register yourself is anmäla sig.
Jag vill anmäla mig till SFI.I would like to register for SFI.The opening line at a municipal counter or on the phone.
Var anmäler jag mig?Where do I register? When the website has sent you round in a circle and you have given up and called.
kommunenthe municipalityThe body that decides eligibility and your start date. Your kommun is named on every piece of local post you get.
en nivåa levelUsed both for CEFR levels and for the group you are placed in. Vilken nivå? is asked constantly.
ett nivåtesta level testWorth asking whether one is part of your intake, since the answer shapes where you start.
Jag har redan läst lite svenska.I have already studied a little Swedish.Say this early. Läsa svenska means to study it, not to read it.
Finns det kurser på kvällen? Are there evening classes? The first question to ask if you arrived here for a job.

What an app is genuinely good at

Turning up every day. The thing that decides whether you speak Swedish in two years is not which method you picked. It is how many days you did something. A phone in your pocket is the only study tool that survives a delayed train, a sick child and a week where work eats everything, because ten minutes fits into a life and ninety minutes does not.

Scheduling the forgetting. Spaced repetition puts a word back in front of you at the point where you are about to lose it, which is the moment retrieval does the most work. A classroom cannot do this, because a class runs on a syllabus and a syllabus does not know which eleven words you personally are about to forget.

The words your own life uses. A beginner syllabus teaches colours and animals. Your first month is hyresvärd, återvinning, faktura, vårdcentral. Being able to load the vocabulary of your actual situation, rather than the average newcomer's, is the difference between Swedish paying you back in your first month and Swedish paying you back next year.

Starting before you have permission to start. This is the real one. You can open a lesson tonight, from another country, with no place, no form submitted and no start date. Nobody has to approve it. The arithmetic of what that is worth is done properly in how long Swedish actually takes in hours, and this article will not redo it.

What an app cannot do, this one included

It cannot hear you. No app corrects the mistake you did not know you were making, because correction requires somebody who noticed. You can drill the sj-sound for a month and be reinforcing your own version of it the whole time. That is not a flaw in one product. It is the boundary of the category, and any app that tells you otherwise is selling you something.

It cannot issue anything. There is no completion screen anywhere that functions as a document. If you need your Swedish written down somewhere that an employer or a school will accept, that comes from a school, and it is worth being blunt about it because a lot of learning apps are quietly vague on this point.

Nobody notices when you stop. An app has no register and no teacher looking at an empty chair. It sends a notification, which is not a person. People who quit a course almost always quit alone, at home, on an evening when nothing in particular happened, and the group is the strongest single defence against that. It is also the reason the honest recommendation is not to replace SFI with anything.

So the split is clean. The app owns the days. The classroom owns the correction and the paperwork. Anyone arguing that one of the two is unnecessary is arguing for a version of the problem that does not exist.

The words that run a classroom

A first day in any course is spent decoding instructions rather than learning the language, unless you arrive with the instructions already in your head. These are the words a teacher says without thinking, twenty times a week, and they are worth more to you in week one than any amount of vocabulary about the weather.

The two most useful sentences in the list are the ones people are least willing to say. Telling a teacher you cannot keep up, or that the pace is too slow for you, is the fastest route to being moved somewhere that fits. Nobody moves you if nobody knows.

In Swedish
In SwedishWhat it meansWhen you use it
en lärarea teacherSame word for men and women, and the plural is identical: en lärare, två lärare.
en kursa courseWhat your class is called on every document you receive about it.
ett prova testVi har prov på fredag means we have a test on Friday. It will be said in passing, quickly.
närvaroattendanceLäraren tar närvaro, the teacher takes the register. Worth understanding the first time you hear it.
en läxaa piece of homeworkVad är läxan till nästa gång? asks what the homework is for next time.
ett studieintyga certificate of studiesWritten confirmation of what you have followed. Ask your school what it issues and when, because the wording varies.
Jag hänger inte med.I can't keep up.Say it to the teacher after class, not during. It is the sentence that gets you help.
Det går för fort för mig. It's going too fast for me.More specific than saying you do not understand, and easier for a teacher to act on.
Kan du säga det en gång till?Could you say that once more?Better than Kan du upprepa det, which sounds like a form. This one sounds like a person.
Kan jag byta grupp? Can I change group? When the level is wrong in either direction. Ask early, because groups settle.

If you have a job and no place yet, do this

Register with your municipality first, this week, before you do anything else on this list. The date belongs to them and the only variable you control is how early you asked. Then put it out of your mind, because refreshing an inbox is not a study method.

Then pick a session size you will still be doing in March. Ten minutes that survive a bad week beat an hour a day that lasts eleven days, and the second pattern is the one almost everybody chooses first. If you are wondering whether Swedish is worth the effort at all before you commit, the seven places Swedish actually gets hard is a more useful read than any comparison of methods.

And front-load the classroom words. Walking into your first lesson already able to say that the pace is too fast, that you have studied a little before, and that you did not catch the last sentence changes what the first month feels like more than any grammar you could cram. Those are the words to have in your mouth on day one, and they take about ten minutes to install.

Questions people ask

Is SFI better than an app for learning Swedish?
They solve different problems, so the comparison misleads. SFI gives you a teacher who corrects you, a group to speak in front of, and an official record of your level, none of which an app can provide. An app gives you a session every day, vocabulary matched to your own situation, and the ability to start before you have a place. So the useful question is not which one but which one first, and the answer to that is the one you can open today.
Should I start learning Swedish before SFI starts?
Yes, and it is the least controversial advice in this article. The time before your place is the stretch when your motivation is highest, your exposure is newest and nothing else is competing for those minutes. Arriving with a few hundred words already retrievable changes what the first weeks in class feel like.
How do I sign up for SFI?
Registration goes through your municipality, which decides eligibility and the date you can enter. Search your kommun's name together with SFI and use their own form or contact number rather than a third-party page. Nobody online can tell you your date, because it is decided locally and depends on your own situation.
Can I do SFI while working full time?
That depends entirely on what your municipality offers and when, so ask them directly and ask in writing. The phrase to have ready is Finns det kurser på kvällen, which means are there evening classes. Whatever the answer, the daily session outside class hours stays under your control, and that is the part that decides the outcome.
Does an app count as proof of my Swedish level?
No. An app can tell you what you know and can place you on a scale for your own planning, but it cannot issue anything an employer or a school will accept. Documented proof comes from a school. That is one of the strongest arguments for taking SFI seriously rather than treating it as optional.
What if the SFI group is too easy or too hard for me?
Say so, in the first two weeks, directly to the teacher. Det går för fort för mig means it is going too fast for me, and Kan jag byta grupp asks whether you can change group. Groups settle quickly and nobody moves you if nobody knows. In the meantime, work outside class at the level you are actually at.

Learning that sticks

How long does Swedish take? In hours, not months.

"About a year" is a useless answer, because it hides the only variable that matters. Here is what B1 costs in hours, what that means at ten, twenty or sixty minutes a day, and why most people's first estimate is wrong in both directions.

When they answer in English

They answer in English. Say this before they do.

The most common reason people give up on Swedish while living in Sweden is that nobody lets them practise. It is not rudeness and it is not your accent. Here is what is actually happening, and the one move that changes it.

Learning that sticks

Swedish sj sound: even Swedes don't agree. Say it anyway.

Sju is the word most beginners quit on, and the sound inside it does not exist in English. It does not exist in one fixed form in Swedish either. Here is what you have to get right, what you can safely approximate, and why the spelling is the part that gives you away.
