The short answer
The Swedish alphabet contains the 26 Latin letters followed by å, ä and ö, in that order. They are independent letters, not decorated versions of a and o. Letter names help you spell, but pronunciation inside a word also depends on vowel length and neighbouring letters.
The 29 letters in Swedish order
The sequence runs from A to Z and then Å, Ä, Ö. Swedish dictionaries, registers and alphabetical lists therefore place Å after Z rather than beside A. Since 2006, W also has its own dictionary position instead of being sorted together with V.
Anchor the final three letters in common words such as år, här and öl. Save them in your SvenskaApp vocabulary with audio rather than relying on an improvised spelling hint.
Å, ä and ö are not accents
Å is often compared with the vowel in more, though accents and vowel length matter. Ä ranges across sounds learners may hear in air and bed. Ö resembles the central rounded vowel in words such as bird when the r is not pronounced.
Those comparisons only point you in the right direction. Practise each letter inside contrasting words and use the guide to Swedish long and short vowels to hear the timing.
A letter name does not explain every sound
K changes between kall and köpa, while g changes between gata and ge. The group sk can produce another sound before certain vowels. The alphabet helps with spelling; reading requires context-sensitive letter-to-sound patterns.
Learn one recurring pattern followed by ten examples, then isolate difficult cases such as the Swedish sj sound. That is more durable than memorising a page of phonetic symbols.
A five-minute drill for any letter
Listen to five words, sort them by the sound you hear, repeat them and record one sentence. The next day, identify the same words without looking at the spelling.
For practical spelling, rehearse your name, street and email address. Then use guided speaking practice to check whether the letters remain clear in a real exchange.
Questions people ask
- How many letters are in the Swedish alphabet?
- There are 29: the 26 letters from A to Z followed by Å, Ä and Ö.
- Are Å, Ä and Ö variants of A and O?
- No. Swedish treats them as separate letters with their own alphabetic positions and sounds that can change a word's meaning.
- Why can one Swedish letter have different sounds?
- Pronunciation depends on surrounding letters, vowel length and sometimes the individual word, so the letter name cannot describe every use.
