BVC in Sweden: free child-health check-ups

Barnavårdscentralen provides free preventive health and development visits until preschool class, but it does not replace urgent care.

The short answer

Swedish BVC provides free preventive appointments from birth until a child starts förskoleklass. It follows growth, development, feeding, language, vaccinations and family wellbeing. BVC is not an emergency department or the service for every acute illness: depending on the situation, call 1177, contact a vårdcentral or call 112.

Registering and contacting BVC

After birth or moving to Sweden, contact the local BVC or vårdcentral to arrange transfer of the child’s records.

Bring health and vaccination information from another country so the team can compare schedules.

For everyday medical care, the vårdcentral and 1177 guide explains the other entry points.

What happens at appointments

The nurse measures growth and discusses sleep, feeding, movement, language and safety.

Some visits include a doctor or vaccination according to the national programme and the child’s situation.

Prepare observations and questions: a parental concern is worth voicing even during preventive care.

Languages and interpreters

Request a professional interpreter when booking if limited Swedish could prevent a safe conversation.

Do not use a child as interpreter for medical discussions.

The 2026 proposal on Swedish screening at BVC has not yet changed current rules.

When to use another service

For non-emergency advice, call 1177; for a serious emergency, call 112.

Acute illness, injury or treatment needs may belong with a vårdcentral or emergency department depending on severity.

Förskola in Sweden: apply before you need the place

Nobody puts your child on a list when you land. A förskola application goes to your kommun, months ahead of the day you need it, and one date field on that form decides whether you go back to work in August or in December. Here is what the kommun asks, and the Swedish spoken at the door afterwards.
