The short answer
When you move within Sweden, submit a free flyttanmälan to Skatteverket before moving or no later than one week afterwards. Filed on time, the population-register address can take effect from move-in day; filed late, it takes effect when Skatteverket receives it. This changes your official address but does not automatically forward mail already sent to the old home: eftersändning is a separate paid service.
One week preserves the correct date
Submit flyttanmälan free of charge through Skatteverket's service or on paper, before moving or no later than one week afterwards.
Filed in that window, the new address normally applies from the real move-in date. Filed later, it applies from the day Skatteverket receives it, which can affect municipal tax, benefits and mail.
Check Mina sidor to confirm receipt. Do not create a duplicate because registration is not immediate: Skatteverket says allocation to a case officer can take around two weeks.

Official address and mail forwarding are separate
The notification changes your folkbokföringsadress. Skatteverket distributes it to many authorities and businesses may retrieve it through SPAR.
Eftersändning redirects letters still addressed to the old home. It is ordered from Svensk Adressändring for a fee. Ordering forwarding alone does not change the population register.
Use this order: official notification, temporary forwarding if needed, then manual updates with senders that do not refresh their records.

Your name belongs on the door
Skatteverket tells residents to put their name on the door and the mailbox or entrance box, including lodgers and subtenants. A correct address without a visible name can still produce undelivered mail.
Do not write c/o in flyttanmälan. Skatteverket does not register c/o as part of the population address. It is a postal instruction for mail handled by someone else, not proof of a sublet.
In an apartment building, provide the official four-digit apartment number requested by the register, which may differ from the landlord's door number.

Children, sublets and address checks
A legal guardian also reports a child's move. The other guardian may be asked to consent online or receive a separate question by post.
If someone is already registered at the address, Skatteverket may ask whether you truly live there. This is not an automatic refusal. Answer with the move-in date and evidence of the real housing arrangement.
Population registration follows where you live, not the most convenient address. In a sublet, also check the andrahand rules rather than confusing landlord permission with population registration.
After the address, prepare two everyday procedures: sick leave at a Swedish workplace and requesting annual leave.
