The short answer
Housing allowance for families with children is calculated from household income, how much the children stay there, home size and eligible housing cost. In 2026, the stated maximum ranges from SEK 4,200 for one child to SEK 6,200 for three or more. It begins no earlier than the application month, and income details must stay current to avoid repayment.
Who may apply
The benefit is intended for lower-income households with at least one child living in the home.
A child must stay there for at least thirty days each year, with extra housing conditions when the stay is less than roughly half the time.
Before applying, make sure the folkbokföring address is correct.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jag vill ansöka om bostadsbidrag. | I would like to apply for housing allowance. | |
| Min inkomst har förändrats. | My income has changed. |
What determines the amount
Försäkringskassan considers income, number of children, time in the home, floor area and eligible housing cost.
The 2026 maximum is SEK 4,200 for one child, SEK 5,200 for two and SEK 6,200 for three or more.
Higher rent does not always increase support because only costs up to a limit are counted.
The application month matters
Bostadsbidrag cannot be paid retrospectively for months before the application.
Use the official calculator first, then prepare the tenancy terms, rent, area, income and custody schedule.
Read the final decision carefully because a calculator result is not an entitlement decision.
Avoiding a repayment
During 2026, benefit is normally checked later against actual income, so a rise can produce repayment and a penalty.
Report changes in pay, household, rent or custody instead of waiting for the next tax return.
Keep figures consistent with the Swedish tax declaration and any pharmacy proxy. The SvenskaApp Housing path helps organise the evidence.
