The short answer
A kollektivavtal is negotiated between an employer or employer organisation and a union. It can govern pay, increases, hours, overtime, occupational pension and insurance. It normally applies to covered employees even when they are not union members, but the actual terms depend on the sector and named agreement.
The agreement that complements law
Sweden has no general statutory minimum wage. Collective agreements shape many employment conditions.
Medlingsinstitutet says 88% of employees are covered although about 70% are union members.

| Vilket avtal gäller? | Which agreement applies? |
Ask for the exact agreement
Request its name and signing parties. The word kollektivavtal alone does not reveal the rates.
Check pay, review date, overtime, supplements, pension and insurance.
Parents should compare it with the public rules for VAB.
Membership and coverage
A bound employer normally applies the agreement to relevant employees whether union members or not. Membership can add advice and representation.
An employer outside an employer organisation may sign a hängavtal directly with a union.
The workplace course practises the short questions to ask before signing.
Before accepting an offer
Get the agreement, probation and pension details in writing. Compare the package, not only gross salary.
Without an agreement, ask how the employer replaces pension, insurance and overtime compensation.
Keep the offer, contract and policies in the version applying on your start date.
