Faulty purchase in Sweden: how to make a complaint

Swedish consumer law generally gives you three years to complain about faulty goods. Learn who to contact, what to keep and what remedy to request.

The short answer

When you buy goods from a business in Sweden, you can normally complain about an original fault for up to three years. Act once you notice it: a complaint within two months is always considered timely. Contact the seller, not just the manufacturer, record the defect, provide proof of purchase and state the remedy you want.

A legal right lasting three years

Reklamationsrätt is a statutory right, not the same thing as a shop warranty. It generally lasts three years for goods sold by a business to a consumer.

You still need to notify the seller within a reasonable time after discovering the problem. A complaint made within two months always meets that timing rule.

Keep the receipt, order confirmation and photos. If you return in person, Swedish checkout phrases can make the exchange clearer.

Contact the seller

Your agreement is with the business that sold the item. It remains your main contact even if staff suggest speaking directly to the manufacturer.

State when you bought the product, what went wrong and when the issue appeared. Use email or another channel that leaves a record.

A bank statement may help when a receipt is missing, but you still need to establish what you bought, when and from which business.

Ask for a suitable remedy

The seller can often begin with a repair or replacement, provided it is free and completed within a reasonable time.

A price reduction or cancellation may become appropriate when the fix fails or the fault is serious enough.

For dental treatment or a clinic estimate, first understand Swedish dental support and reference prices so you can separate a high price from a faulty service.

Evidence and the next step

During the first two years, the seller generally has to show that the fault was not original. After that, more of the burden moves to the consumer.

If discussion stalls, summarise your request, set a reasonable response date and use guidance from Konsumentverket or municipal consumer advice.

If a dangerous product has caused an accident, use the appropriate Swedish emergency number. Employer-provided equipment is a separate employment issue, just like the rules around changing jobs on a work permit.
