The short answer
The Swedish government proposed on 8 July 2026 that a work permit should no longer be tied to one employer and occupation. Permit holders would instead notify Migrationsverket when one job ends and another starts. The suggested start date is 1 February 2027, so anyone changing jobs before legislation takes effect must follow the rules currently in force.
The proposed shift
The draft sent to the Council on Legislation would let eligible permit holders move employer without filing an entirely new permit application.
It replaces advance reapplication with a duty to report both the end of the old employment and the start of the new one.
This proposal sits alongside the 2026 salary requirement for Swedish work permits.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jag har bytt arbetsgivare. | I have changed employer. | |
| När börjar de nya reglerna gälla? | When do the new rules take effect? |
Why the date needs a question mark
The government wants the amendments to apply from 1 February 2027. A legislative proposal does not itself change the conditions on your current decision.
Check Migrationsverket's live guidance before resigning or signing a start date. News coverage is not evidence that your permit conditions have changed.
Ask the new employer which collective agreement covers the role.
More time after unemployment
The proposal also gives a person who has held a work permit for more than two years an adjustment period of up to six months after losing work.
That is time to secure qualifying work, not a waiver of all residence conditions. Keep a dated record of applications, interviews and offers.
If employment ends, start with the first-day a-kassa checklist.
A safer way to plan a move
Get a written offer showing legal employer, start date, hours and salary. Compare every field with the permit decision you hold today.
Store the decision, old and new contracts, payslips and future notifications together. Families should also coordinate any preschool arrangements.
Confirm the legal employer in light of Sweden's inquiry into illegal-labour chains. The SvenskaApp Career path provides the Swedish needed to clarify an offer before giving notice.
