The short answer
Register with Arbetsförmedlingen on the first day you are genuinely unemployed and available for work, and state that you intend to claim a-kassa. Then apply to the unemployment fund itself and meet its evidence and job-search requirements. Arbetsförmedlingen and the a-kassa perform different roles, so registration alone does not start benefit payments.
Protect the starting date
Arbetsförmedlingen tells jobseekers to register on day one. Waiting may leave days outside the period assessed for benefit.
Enter the real final work date and disclose availability, unfinished studies and childcare arrangements.
Work-permit holders should also follow the proposed 2027 adjustment period after job loss.

The fund needs its own application
Your a-kassa decides entitlement and amount. Submit its form plus employer certificates and income information.
A person who is not a member can ask to join when unemployment begins, but late membership does not automatically produce the same level of cover.
Answer requests for missing information quickly and use the fund's own rules for the final calculation.
Availability is an active condition
A claimant generally needs to seek work, be able to accept suitable employment and file required activity reports.
Childcare, travel outside Sweden or ongoing study can affect availability. Report them rather than treating them as private details.
Parents may need to coordinate this with Swedish parental benefit.
Keep an audit trail
Save registration confirmation, the application, arbetsgivarintyg, job applications and decisions in date order.
Read decisions through to the appeal deadline and request a written explanation if the calculation is unclear.
