The short answer
From the year you turn 20, Swedish state dental support may combine the annual ATB allowance with high-cost protection. Get a written estimate before treatment: support is calculated from the lower of the clinic's charge and the official reference price, while any amount above that reference price remains yours to pay.
The allowance changes with age
The general dental allowance, or ATB, is credited yearly. In 2026 it is SEK 600 for ages 20 to 23, SEK 300 for ages 24 to 65 and SEK 600 from age 67.
A temporary rule also gives SEK 600 to people who are 66 during 2026.

Where high-cost protection begins
During a rolling twelve-month period, you pay the first SEK 3,000 of eligible reference-price costs.
The scheme then covers 50% of the eligible amount above SEK 3,000 and 85% of the amount above SEK 15,000.
A clinic connected to the scheme normally applies the support directly rather than asking you to claim it later.
Reference price versus the clinic bill
The calculation uses whichever is lower: the state reference price or the clinic's actual charge.
Dentists may charge more than the reference price. That difference is outside the protection and is paid in full by the patient.
Ask for the treatment code, alternatives and final cost after support. If a paid product or service is faulty, use Sweden's consumer complaint process.

For non-urgent care, compare the estimate and ask what must be treated now and what can safely wait.
Keep the treatment plan, receipts and written answers from the clinic.
