Swedish at the dentist, from the call to the chair

Something hurts, the number is on your screen, and you do not press it because you cannot picture the conversation. A dental reception asks four things and then offers you a time. This is Swedish at the dentist, from that phone call to the sentences said above your head while your mouth is full.

The short answer

The dentist is en tandläkare and the hygienist is en tandhygienist. To be seen, you ring a clinic and say Jag skulle vilja boka en tid hos tandläkaren. Jag behöver en akuttid asks for the emergency slot. Swedish splits pain into separate words: det gör ont is plain pain, det ilar is a short sharp twinge, det värker is a dull ache that stays, and det är känsligt för kallt is sensitivity. In the chair you mostly listen: öppna stort, bit ihop, skölj, säg till om det gör ont, det kan svida lite. What a visit involves for you, and what you pay, depends on your region and your own situation, and the reception desk is where that answer lives.

The call is four questions long, and you may read your half

There is a particular kind of stuck: a tooth is hurting, the clinic number is open on your phone, and the button does not get pressed. Not because of the tooth. Because you cannot imagine holding a conversation in Swedish about it while it hurts. So the useful thing to know first is how short the call actually is. A dental reception wants your name, your personnummer, what is wrong in one sentence, and how long it has been going on. Then they either offer you a time or tell you there is nothing today.

That is the whole exchange, and the person on the other end cannot see you. Nothing stops you reading your sentences off a screen, in order, at your own speed. The words that get you a slot are en tid, a booked appointment, and en akuttid, the emergency slot, which is the word that tells the desk your call is not a routine booking. There is a third one worth having: en återbudstid, a slot that opens up because somebody else cancelled. Asking to be put on the list for those costs one sentence and often moves you forward by days.

Say the Swedish first and all of it, before you offer to switch. That single habit is what keeps the reply in Swedish, and it is the whole of the sentence that stops people switching to English. If the phone in Swedish is new to you generally, the mechanics of getting through one are the same as for a health centre, and how a vårdcentral works and when to call 1177 covers those.

en tandläkarea dentistAn en word. Hos tandläkaren is at the dentist's, with the ending on the end.
en tandhygienista dental hygienistA separate appointment and often a separate slot in the diary.
Jag skulle vilja boka en tid hos tandläkaren.I would like to book an appointment with the dentist.Your opening line. Nothing else is needed before they start asking.
Jag behöver en akuttid.I need an emergency appointment.Name it in your first sentence rather than at the end of the call.
Har ni någon akuttid i dag?Do you have an emergency appointment today?Ni, because you are speaking to the clinic and not to one person.
Finns det någon återbudstid? Is there a slot from a cancellation?Ask when the first offer is weeks away. Återbud is a cancelled booking.
Jag är ny patient hos er.I am a new patient here.Say it early. It changes how long they book for you.
Vad har du för personnummer? What is your personal number?Asked within the first thirty seconds. Know yours without looking.

Swedish has four ways of hurting and they are not interchangeable

English leans on one word and adds adjectives to it. Swedish gives the sensations their own verbs, and the reception desk is listening for which one you pick. Det gör ont is pain, flat and general, the safe thing to say when you are not sure. Det ilar is the short sharp one that arrives and leaves, the sensation most people describe with cold drinks. Det värker is the dull one that sits there and does not move. And känslig is sensitivity, as in det är känsligt för kallt.

Watch the ending on that last one. With det as the subject you get det är känsligt, with the neuter form. With the tooth as the subject it becomes tanden är känslig, because en tand is an en word. It is one letter and it is the letter that tells someone you have said this before.

What gets asked next is when and how long, in that order. When is a när clause: när jag tuggar, när jag biter ihop, när jag dricker något kallt. How long is hur länge har du haft ont, and the answer is a number or a day: i tre dagar, sedan i söndags. Location comes last and comes rough, because nobody expects you to name the tooth. Uppe till höger and nere till vänster are enough to point at, and jag vet inte exakt vilken tand is a complete and normal answer.

In Swedish
In SwedishWhat it meansWhen you use it
Det gör ont.It hurts. The general one. Use it when none of the others obviously fits.
Det ilar.I get a sharp twinge.Short and sudden, gone as fast as it came. Ila is its own verb.
Det värker. It aches. The dull kind that stays. Värk is the noun behind tandvärk.
Jag har tandvärk.I have toothache.Said with no article in front, the way you say jag har feber.
Det är känsligt för kallt. It is sensitive to cold.Känsligt with det, känslig with tanden. Add och varmt for both.
Det gör ont när jag tuggar. It hurts when I chew. When it hurts is worth more to them than where it hurts.
Det ilar när jag dricker något kallt.I get a twinge when I drink something cold. The most useful full sentence in this whole article.
Hur länge har du haft ont?How long have you been in pain? You will be asked. Answer i tre dagar or sedan i söndags.
Det är en tand uppe till höger. It is a tooth at the top on the right.Nere till vänster for the other corner. Rough is fine.

Hål, fyllning, bedövning: the words for what is being proposed

Two nouns turn up before anything is decided. En undersökning is an examination and en röntgen is an X-ray, and both usually arrive inside a longer sentence: vi börjar med en undersökning, vi behöver ta en röntgen. Recognising them instantly is what keeps the rest of that sentence intelligible.

Then comes the Swedish word that delights everyone who learns it. A cavity is ett hål, which is simply the ordinary word for a hole. Du har ett hål i en tand is a dentist saying you have a hole in a tooth, in the same words you would use about a sock. The repair is en fyllning, a filling, and the verb that goes with it is laga, to mend: vi lagar tanden i dag. Numbing is en bedövning, and the question you are asked about it is usually vill du ha bedövning, with no article at all.

A few more turn up in the sentence that starts du behöver: en krona is a crown, en rotfyllning is a root filling, tandsten is what the hygienist scrapes off. This is a glossary and nothing else. What is going on and what to do about it belongs to the person holding the mirror, and the two sentences that make them repeat it in words you have are kan du säga det en gång till and kan du skriva ner det.

In Swedish
In SwedishWhat it meansWhen you use it
en undersökningan examinationThe looking and deciding part. Vi börjar med en undersökning.
en röntgenan X-rayVi behöver ta en röntgen. En röntgenbild is the picture itself.
ett håla cavityLiterally a hole, and an ett word. Du har ett hål i en tand.
en fyllninga fillingThe repair. En lagning is used for the same thing in speech.
Vi lagar tanden i dag.We will fix the tooth today.Laga is the everyday verb for mending anything, teeth included.
en bedövningan anaestheticThe numbing injection. Vill du ha bedövning is how you get asked.
en behandlinga treatmentThe umbrella word. En behandlingsplan is the plan across several visits.
Kan du säga det en gång till?Could you say that once more?Cheaper than nodding at a word you did not catch.

Five sentences said above your head while your mouth is full

The chair reverses the usual problem. Everywhere else in Sweden you are struggling to produce Swedish. Here you cannot speak at all, and the entire job is understanding five or six short imperatives the first time they are said.

Öppna stort is open wide. You will also hear gapa, which is the verb for opening your mouth and the one most dentists reach for: gapa stort, gapa lite större. Bit ihop is bite down, often bit ihop på den här with something between your teeth. Skölj is rinse, and it is your cue to sit up and reach for the cup. Säg till om det gör ont is tell me if it hurts, which is an instruction rather than a courtesy. And det kan svida lite is a warning that something will sting for a moment, most often attached to the injection.

Since talking is off the table, agree on a signal before you lie back. Räck upp handen om det gör ont is standard, and saying jag räcker upp handen om jag behöver en paus while you are still upright takes three seconds and changes the entire appointment.

In Swedish
In SwedishWhat it meansWhen you use it
Öppna stort.Open wide. The first instruction. Gapa stort means the same and is heard more.
Gapa lite större.Open a bit wider.Gapa is the verb for opening your mouth, with no object needed.
Bit ihop.Bite down.Often bit ihop på den här, with something placed between your teeth.
Skölj.Rinse.Your cue to sit up. Du kan skölja nu is the polite long version.
Säg till om det gör ont.Tell me if it hurts.Said before they start. It is an instruction, not small talk.
Det kan svida lite. This may sting a little.Svida is stinging rather than aching. Usually the injection.
Känns det bedövat?Does it feel numb?Asked after the injection, before anything else happens.
Räck upp handen om det gör ont.Raise your hand if it hurts. The signal you agree on while you can still talk.
Nu är vi klara. We are done now.The sentence you are listening for the entire time.

How to ask to be told before anything happens

Plenty of people want a running commentary and never ask for one, because asking feels like admitting something. In Swedish it is a single sentence and it lands as information rather than as a confession: kan du säga till innan du börjar. Say it at the booking stage as well as in the room, because a reception that knows can give you a longer slot.

Being frightened of the dentist has an ordinary Swedish name, tandvårdsrädsla, and it appears on clinic pages as a plain heading rather than a euphemism. Jag är rädd för tandläkare and jag är nervös both work in the room, and neither needs an explanation attached. Ask for pauses in advance rather than mid procedure: kan vi ta en paus när jag behöver det is a question that gets a yes before the drill is anywhere near you.

Money has its own sentence and it is asked before, not after. Kan jag få ett kostnadsförslag innan vi börjar asks for a written estimate, and vad kostar undersökningen asks the narrower question about the visit itself. What any of it comes to for you depends on your region and your own situation, and no article can tell you which figures apply. The reception desk can, and vad gäller för mig is the four-word way to make them.

In Swedish
In SwedishWhat it meansWhen you use it
Kan du säga till innan du börjar?Could you tell me before you start?Say it while you are sitting up, and again at the booking.
Kan du berätta vad du gör innan du gör det?Could you tell me what you are doing before you do it?The longer version, for when a running commentary is what you want.
Jag är rädd för tandläkare.I am afraid of dentists.A complete sentence. Nothing needs to follow it.
tandvårdsrädsladental anxietyThe word on clinic pages. Worth recognising when you are reading one.
Kan vi ta en paus? Can we take a break?Agree on it before you lie back rather than during.
Jag vill gärna ha bedövning.I would like to have the anaesthetic.Gärna makes it a preference rather than a demand.
Kan jag få ett kostnadsförslag innan vi börjar?Could I have a cost estimate before we start?Ett kostnadsförslag is a written estimate. Ask before, not after.
Vad gäller för mig? What applies in my case? The question that gets a real answer at the desk, whatever your situation.

Two receptions, and the letter that arrives before you ask

Dental care in Sweden goes by tandvård, and it is arranged separately from the health centre world of vårdcentraler and 1177. You book a clinic directly. Folktandvården is the name of the region's own dental service and it has clinics under that name in most places, while en privat tandläkarmottagning is a private practice. Both take bookings by phone and through their own websites.

The thing worth noticing before you dial is that regional sites and phone menus separate two tracks in their wording: tandvård för barn och unga on one side, tandvård för vuxna on the other, sometimes with different numbers and different reception hours. Which one applies to you, what it covers and what any of it costs are all decided regionally, and they depend on your own circumstances. Reading it off an article is how people arrive with the wrong expectation. Asking at the desk is how they arrive with the right one.

Two more words come to you rather than the other way round. En kallelse is the letter or message that calls you in for an appointment, with a date already on it. If it does not suit, the verbs are omboka, to move it, and avboka, to cancel it. Your confirmation will also mention uteblivet besök, a missed appointment, and the clinic's own terms for one are written on that confirmation, so read it when it arrives rather than when you are late.

In Swedish
In SwedishWhat it meansWhen you use it
tandvårddental careThe umbrella word on every regional page and phone menu.
Folktandvårdenthe region's public dental serviceA clinic name you will see on the street, alongside private practices.
tandvård för barn och ungadental care for children and young peopleOne of the two headings sites split their information under.
tandvård för vuxnadental care for adultsThe other heading. Often a different number and different hours.
en kallelsean appointment letterArrives with a date already set. Att bli kallad is to be called in.
Jag behöver omboka min tid.I need to move my appointment.Omboka moves it and avboka cancels it outright.
ett uteblivet besöka missed appointmentOn your confirmation, with the clinic's own terms next to it.
Kan ni ordna en tolk? Can you arrange an interpreter?Ask when you book, not on the day, so there is time to arrange it.

The chair is the easy part

Once you are lying down, Swedish stops being a performance. You listen to five imperatives you now recognise, and you answer with a hand. The hard part happened earlier, standing in the hallway with a phone, and it is the part that repeats: every booking, every move, every time somebody asks how long it has been hurting.

So spend twenty minutes this week on the half that repeats, which is the phone call. Start with the feelings unit, ten minutes at a time, until det ilar and det värker and jag är nervös come out whole instead of assembled. The months before an SFI place opens are the cheapest practice hours you will ever get, and the sentences you drill on a Tuesday when nothing hurts are the only ones that will be there on the morning something does. The counter version of the same set, for the day you walk out with a prescription, is in the Swedish pharmacy phrases.

Questions people ask

How do you say toothache in Swedish?
Tandvärk. You say jag har tandvärk with no article in front, the same way you say jag har feber. If you can point at one tooth, jag har ont i en tand is more precise and is what a reception desk prefers. Värk is the noun for a dull persistent ache, which is why it sits inside the word.
How do I book an emergency dentist appointment in Swedish?
Ring the clinic and say jag behöver en akuttid, or ask har ni någon akuttid i dag. An akuttid is the emergency slot, and naming it in your first sentence tells the desk what kind of call this is. If the first offer is far off, finns det någon återbudstid asks about slots freed by cancellations. What is available depends on the clinic and the region, so ask rather than assume.
What does gapa stort mean at the dentist?
Open wide. Gapa is the Swedish verb for opening your mouth and needs no object, so gapa stort and gapa lite större are both complete instructions. Öppna stort means the same thing. The other four you will hear are bit ihop, bite down, skölj, rinse, säg till om det gör ont, tell me if it hurts, and det kan svida lite, this may sting a little.
What is Folktandvården?
Folktandvården is the name of a region's own dental service, and its clinics carry that name on the street alongside private practices called tandläkarmottagning. You book either kind directly by phone or through their site. What any visit involves for you and what you pay is set regionally and depends on your situation, so the reception desk is the only reliable place to ask.
How do I tell the dentist to stop or explain what they are doing?
Agree on it before you lie back, while you can still talk. Räck upp handen om det gör ont is the standard wording for raising your hand as a signal. Kan du säga till innan du börjar asks to be warned before each step, kan vi ta en paus asks for a break, and jag är nervös is a complete sentence that needs nothing after it.
Do dentists in Sweden speak English?
Very often, yes. What stays in Swedish is everything around the appointment: the phone menu, the SMS confirmation, the kallelse that arrives with a date on it, and the wording on the region's website. That is roughly twenty words, which is why learning them pays back faster than hoping the room switches language for you. Kan ni ordna en tolk asks about an interpreter, and it is a question for the booking call rather than the day itself.
