Elavtal: choosing electricity in Sweden

A Swedish home normally needs two agreements: the local grid contract and an electricity supply contract you can compare.

Lire en français

The short answer

Electricity in Sweden normally requires an elnätsavtal with the local grid operator and an elhandelsavtal with a supplier you choose. Contact both when moving, compare fixed or variable prices and fees, and confirm the start date so you do not remain on an assigned contract that is often more expensive.

Two contracts and sometimes two bills

Elnätsavtal pays for the local grid and the operator is fixed by address. Elhandelsavtal buys the energy and can be compared across suppliers.

Without an active choice you may receive an anvisat avtal, which the regulator says is often more expensive.

Then protect the household with suitable Swedish home insurance.

Before moving in

Ask the landlord for the grid operator and prepare the address, apartment number and start date.

Compare price per kWh, standing fee, term, notice and electricity source rather than the headline rate alone.

Digital identification may be requested, but Freja+ and BankID are not accepted identically.

When moving out

Notify both grid operator and supplier. If the grid agreement remains open, charges may continue after you leave.

Record the meter when accessible and keep written confirmations showing the end date.

Read the bill

Separate energy, grid, taxes and VAT. A higher total does not always mean the energy price rose.

Check the billing period, kWh consumption and whether the reading is measured or estimated.

Challenge an anomaly in writing with customer number, address, period and meter reading, then request a written answer.

Questions people ask

Why do I receive two electricity bills?
Grid distribution and energy supply are separate services and may be billed by different companies.
Can I choose the grid operator?
No. It is determined by the address, while the electricity supplier is your choice.
What is an anvisat avtal?
It is an assigned supply contract used when you have not chosen one, and it is often less competitive.
