Hemförsäkring: home insurance in Sweden

Swedish home insurance covers more than the home: belongings, liability, legal expenses, assault and travel form the core package.

The short answer

Hemförsäkring matters in a rental, tenant-owned apartment or house. The core package protects belongings and normally includes personal liability, legal expenses, assault and travel cover. Before buying, check exactly who counts as part of the household, the insured address, excesses and compensation limits.

One policy, several protections

Konsumenternas describes hemförsäkring as a package covering belongings, travel, liability, legal expenses and assault. Limits differ by policy.

A landlord insures the building, not your belongings or personal liability. Renting one room or subletting does not remove that need.

Also learn how the shared tvättstuga works, a daily housing rule rarely explained in the lease.

Match the policy to the home

For a hyresrätt, the base policy covers your belongings and personal protections. A bostadsrätt often needs an extra apartment-owner component unless the association provides it collectively.

Use the real address and household composition. Ask whether a flatmate, partner or child is included rather than assuming.

When moving, arrange both parts of the electricity contract to avoid an assigned supply contract.

Compare more than the premium

Compare the excess, maximum contents value, away-from-home cover and exclusions. A small monthly saving can become a large difference after a claim.

Photograph valuable items and keep receipts or other proof of ownership. Insurers may ask you to show both ownership and value.

If something happens

Limit further damage without risking your safety, alert the landlord when the building is affected and contact the insurer promptly.

Keep photos, any police report number and receipts for necessary expenses. Give a chronological account.

Ask for a written decision if compensation is refused, then follow the insurer's stated complaints route.

Questions people ask

Do renters need hemförsäkring?
Yes. It protects your belongings, liability and legal expenses, which the landlord's building insurance does not cover for you.
Is my partner automatically covered?
Not necessarily. Check the policy's household definition and register everyone who should be insured.
What is självrisk?
It is the excess or deductible, the part of a loss you pay yourself.
