Swedish healthcare frikort and high-cost protection

Outpatient high-cost protection adds eligible fees over twelve months, after which a frikort covers qualifying visits.

The short answer

Swedish outpatient high-cost protection adds eligible patient fees during a rolling twelve-month period starting with the first counted visit. Once the region's threshold is reached, a frikort covers qualifying visits for the rest of that period. Vaccinations, certificates, missed appointments and inpatient daily charges are often excluded.

A rolling period, not a calendar year

The twelve months begin with the first registered visit, regardless of the month.

After you reach the regional threshold, the frikort runs until that twelve-month period ends.

This sits alongside the practical process of using a vårdcentral, but does not replace booking care.

The card works across Sweden

A valid frikort applies in every Swedish region for care covered by the scheme.

Electronic systems still vary, so a paper copy may help when visiting another region.

In most regions, 1177 shows the accumulated amount and expiry date.

Common exclusions

Vaccinations, certificates, health checks and missed appointments are generally outside the scheme.

Daily inpatient charges and some invoice administration fees are also usually excluded.

Ask before the visit because patient charges and thresholds are set by the region.

Keep track of missing fees

Retain receipts when a provider is outside the electronic system or if you choose paper tracking.

Ask the region to add eligible missing charges and provide the evidence.

In a household budget, separate the frikort from child allowance and housing allowance. The SvenskaApp Health path practises reception questions.
