Interpreter fees in Sweden: proposal versus reality

Consultation responses on a possible interpreter charge and restrictions on child interpreting were published through September 2026.

The short answer

Swedish inquiry SOU 2026:23 recommends a charge for some publicly funded interpreting and a ban on using children as interpreters. The government consultation page was updated on 17 September 2026 as organisations submitted responses. These are proposals under review, not a nationwide fee and ban that automatically apply today.

What a remiss actually means

A remiss is the formal consultation stage: authorities, municipalities and organisations explain how a proposal may work in practice.

Published responses reveal support, objections and implementation problems. They do not enact the inquiry's recommendations.

The same distinction matters when reading the 2027 work-permit employer-change proposal.

Kostar tolken något för mig? Will I be charged for the interpreter?
Jag behöver en professionell tolk.I need a professional interpreter.

The report contains two separate ideas

One recommendation is a user charge for certain publicly funded interpreting. Any scope and exemptions would need to be set in later legislation.

The other is a prohibition on children interpreting for adults in public services.

The rationales differ: public cost and incentives for the first, child protection and reliable communication for the second.

Questions to ask before an appointment

When booking, ask whether an interpreter is available, for which language, remotely or in person, and whether the service currently charges the user.

Do not rely on a child to translate a diagnosis, legal right, debt or consent. Small omissions can change the decision being made.

How to follow the issue accurately

The consultation page collects official responses. A later bill would be a new document with its own wording and date.

An updated page is not proof that every recommendation was accepted; check what was added and by whom.

An interpreted decision may also affect an a-kassa claim or parental-benefit plan. The SvenskaApp Society unit helps you ask for a precise explanation.

Questions people ask

Do public interpreters already cost users a fee?
Not because of this report. Ask the specific service about current rules; the national charge remains a proposal.
Is child interpreting already banned nationwide?
The inquiry recommends a ban, but users should check current law and request a professional interpreter now.
What is a remiss?
It is a formal consultation in which affected organisations comment before the government decides how to proceed.
