Swedish att or och: same sound, different jobs

In everyday speech, att and och can both sound like å. In writing, att introduces an infinitive or clause, while och connects equal elements.

The short answer

Write att before an infinitive or content clause: att läsa, Jag vet att hon kommer. Write och to join two words, phrases or clauses: kaffe och te. Both can reduce to a sound like å in casual speech, but their grammatical roles remain separate.

Att before an infinitive

Att läsa means to read or the act of reading. Some verbs keep att before the following infinitive: Jag gillar att läsa. Modal verbs such as kan, ska and måste remove it: Jag kan läsa.

The pattern becomes clearer in the guide to Swedish modal verbs, which explains why two English infinitives may use different Swedish structures.

Att before a content clause

In Jag tror att hon kommer, att corresponds to that and opens a subordinate clause. It is not linking two objects; it introduces a new clause with its own subject and verb.

The internal order then follows subordinate-clause rules. The Swedish BIFF grammar page shows why inte moves before the finite verb.

Och joins elements at the same level

Och connects kaffe och te, läsa och skriva, or two complete main clauses. When the second clause has its own subject, it retains main-clause word order.

To move beyond strings of och, continue with Swedish linking words for A2-B1 and learn what each connector does to word order.

How to decide when both sound like å

Ask whether the word joins two comparable elements. If it does, write och. If it introduces the following action or a content clause, write att.

In dictation, capture the whole structure before choosing the spelling. A short Swedish dictation routine trains this reasoning better than an isolated word list.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between att and och in Swedish?
Att introduces an infinitive or subordinate content clause. Och coordinates words, phrases or clauses at the same level.
Why do att and och sometimes sound the same?
In casual speech, both can reduce to a sound close to å. Sentence structure then tells you which word is present.
Do you use att after kan, ska or måste?
No. Swedish modal verbs take a bare infinitive: kan läsa, ska arbeta and måste gå.
