The short answer
A Swedish CV is one to two pages, reverse chronological, with no photo needed, no civil status, no religion, and never a personnummer. The personligt brev is short, concrete and written in the first person about what you did and what you want to do next, not in the formal register a French or Spanish cover letter uses. Two Swedish habits decide the reading: understatement, because a CV that claims to be the best candidate reads as unreliable rather than confident, and evidence, because a specific number is believed where an adjective is not. Referenser, referees, are named at the end or offered on request, and they are actually called.
What goes on the page, and what never does
Keep it to one page, two if you genuinely have the years. Reverse chronological, most recent first, with dates by month and year. Employers here read quickly and expect the structure to be the same as everyone else's.
Leave out personnummer, marital status, number of children, religion and nationality. A photo is optional and increasingly left off, and no serious employer will reject you for not including one.
Include the things Swedish readers actually look for: what you did rather than what you were responsible for, the tools and systems you used by name, your languages with an honest level, and whether you can work in Sweden without sponsorship. Language level matters enough that it is worth being precise rather than generous, and the hours behind each CEFR level are a good sanity check before you write B2.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Personligt brev | Cover letter | The name of the document. Always attached, always short. |
| Meriter | Qualifications, merits | The heading covering what you bring. |
| Anställningsform | Type of employment | Permanent, fixed term, hourly. Job ads state it. |
| Tillträde omgående | Start immediately | Common line in ads. Say when you can actually start. |
The personligt brev, and the tone that sinks it
Three short paragraphs. Why this job at this employer, what you have done that is relevant with one concrete example, and what you would bring to the team. Half a page is normal, a full page is long.
The register is plainer than a French cover letter and much plainer than an American one. No elaborate courtesy formulas, no I am convinced that my profile corresponds perfectly, and no superlatives about yourself. Jag tror att jag skulle passa bra i teamet is a normal Swedish sentence and reads as confident here; the same thought dressed in three clauses reads as noise.
Address it to a person if the ad names one, with Hej Anna rather than a formal salutation. Sign off with Med vänliga hälsningar and your name. The email conventions are the ones in our article on Swedish emails, and they apply to the application itself.
Write it in Swedish if the ad is in Swedish, even imperfectly, and if your Swedish is still thin, the free routes that fix it fastest are here. An honest line saying your Swedish is a work in progress is better received than an English letter, because it answers the question the reader already has.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jag söker tjänsten som projektledare. | I'm applying for the position of project manager. | First line. Name the job exactly as the ad does. |
| Jag har arbetat med detta i tre år. | I have worked with this for three years. | Concrete beats adjectives every time. |
| Jag håller på att lära mig svenska och klarar enklare samtal. | I'm learning Swedish and can manage simple conversations. | Honest, specific, and better than silence on the subject. |
| Med vänliga hälsningar | Kind regards | The standard sign-off for an application. |
Understatement is not modesty, it is the local unit of credibility
A claim that cannot be checked is discounted here. Ansvarig för att öka försäljningen tells a Swedish reader nothing; Ökade försäljningen med 14 procent på ett år tells them something they can ask about in the interview.
The same instinct applies to how you describe yourself. Words like driven, engagerad and strukturerad are in every application and carry almost no weight. One sentence describing a situation you handled carries more than five adjectives.
This is the cultural point behind Jantelagen, and it is often misread as a rule against ambition. It is not. It is a preference for evidence over assertion, and once you write that way the rest of the application becomes easier.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jag ansvarade för fyra personer. | I was responsible for four people. | A number instead of a claim. |
| Vi minskade handläggningstiden från tio till sex dagar. | We reduced processing time from ten to six days. | Vi is fine. Swedish teams talk in we. |
| Jag lärde mig systemet på två veckor. | I learned the system in two weeks. | Specific, checkable, and modest in tone. |
| Jag har inte gjort exakt detta, men… | I haven't done exactly this, but… | Admitting a gap early is read as reliability. |
Where the jobs are advertised, and the words in the ad
Platsbanken, run by Arbetsförmedlingen, carries a large share of public postings, and LinkedIn carries a large share of private ones. Many roles in Sweden are also filled through bemanningsföretag, staffing agencies, which is a normal route rather than a lesser one.
The vocabulary of an ad is fixed enough to learn once. Tillsvidareanställning is a permanent contract, vikariat is a temporary post covering somebody, provanställning is a probationary period of up to six months, heltid and deltid are full and part time, and sista ansökningsdag is the closing date.
Kollektivavtal in an ad means the workplace has a collective agreement, which affects pay, pension and holiday, and shows up on the payslip itself. Whether you then join a union is a separate decision, covered in the article on fackförbund.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Sista ansökningsdag är den 30 september. | The closing date is 30 September. | Applications are often read as they arrive. Do not wait. |
| Vi tillämpar sex månaders provanställning. | We apply a six-month probationary period. | Standard, and legal up to six months. |
| Tjänsten är en tillsvidareanställning på heltid. | The position is permanent and full time. | The phrase you are hoping to read. |
| Vi har kollektivavtal. | We have a collective agreement. | Affects pay, pension and holiday terms. |
References, and the follow-up that is welcome
Referenser are real in Sweden. Two former managers, named with their role and phone number, either on the CV or offered with referenser lämnas på begäran. Ask them first, and tell them which job you applied for.
Following up is not pushy if it is short. A week after the closing date, a two-line email asking where the process stands is normal and sometimes remembered.
If the answer is no, one question is worth asking: what would have made the application stronger. Swedish recruiters answer it more often than you would expect, and the answer is usually specific enough to change the next application.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Referenser lämnas på begäran. | References available on request. | The line at the end of a CV. |
| Jag ville bara höra hur det går med rekryteringen. | I just wanted to hear how the recruitment is going. | The follow-up, a week after the deadline. |
| Tack för att ni tog er tid. | Thank you for taking the time. | After an interview or a rejection. |
| Vad hade gjort min ansökan starkare? | What would have made my application stronger? | Ask it after a no. People answer. |
Questions people ask
- How long should a Swedish CV be?
- One page, two only if you have the years to fill it. Reverse chronological with month and year dates, the tools and systems named, and languages given at an honest level. Swedish recruiters read fast and expect the same structure from everybody.
- Should I put a photo on a Swedish CV?
- It is optional and increasingly left off. What must not be there is your personnummer, marital status, number of children, religion or nationality. Nobody will reject an application for having no photo.
- How long is a personligt brev?
- Half a page, three short paragraphs: why this job here, what you have done that is relevant with one concrete example, what you would bring. The tone is plainer than a French cover letter, with no formal courtesy phrases and no superlatives about yourself.
- Should I apply in Swedish or English?
- In the language of the ad. If the ad is in Swedish, write in Swedish even if it is imperfect, and say in one honest line where your Swedish is. That answers the question the reader already has, and an English letter leaves it open.
- Are references actually contacted in Sweden?
- Yes, regularly. Name two former managers with role and phone number, or write referenser lämnas på begäran and have them ready. Ask them in advance and tell them which job it is, because a surprised referee is worse than none.
