The short answer
Use den här with an en noun, det här with an ett noun and de här in the plural. The noun takes its definite form: den här bilen, det här huset, de här böckerna. Point to nearby objects, then contrast them with den där, det där and de där.
Point and name
Choose ten objects around you. Say den här stolen, det här bordet and de här nycklarna. The gesture ties the structure to a real referent rather than a grammar box.
If gender slows you down, review the grammar of *en* and *ett* and always record each noun with its article.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| den här stolen | this chair | |
| det här bordet | this table | |
| de här nycklarna | these keys |
Near versus far
Place two similar objects at different distances. Use den här boken for the one in your hand and den där boken for the other. Repeat with an ett noun and a plural.
Add locations from the i, på and till exercises: den här koppen står på bordet.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Vilken vill du ha, den här eller den där? | Which one do you want, this one or that one? |
The double-definiteness trap
After den här, the noun is definite: bilen, not bil. With an adjective, write den här röda bilen. Article, adjective in -a and definite noun all remain.
Build five shop dialogues. Comparing objects leads naturally into the comparative exercise set.
Test without the object
After working with real objects, recall the same nouns without looking. Picture the scene and produce the full phrase, including the definite noun ending.
