The short answer
Practise i, på and till through scenes: i for being inside or within an area, på for a surface and many activities, and till for a destination. Learn fixed combinations such as på jobbet and i skolan as whole phrases.
Draw before you translate
Sketch a box, a surface and an arrow. Put i rummet inside the box, på bordet on the surface and till Stockholm at the arrowhead. The picture offers a first decision without English mediation.
Real usage is broader than the sketch. The Swedish prepositions of place guide collects the regular cases and the expressions that must be learnt whole.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Boken ligger på bordet. | The book is on the table. | |
| Jag åker till Malmö. | I am travelling to Malmö. |
Location versus destination
Write two sentences for each place: Jag är i Stockholm and Jag åker till Stockholm. Repeat with school, work and home, checking the idiomatic form each time.
Combine this drill with den här and det här practice by describing objects in your immediate surroundings.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jag är på jobbet. | I am at work. | |
| Jag går till jobbet. | I am going to work. |
Correct in chunks
Do not store only på = on. Record på jobbet, på bio and på svenska as separate chunks. A useful recall test hides the preposition but leaves the noun visible.
Finish with five photos from your phone. Say where each object is and where you will move it. Personal production exposes weak combinations quickly.
Space the review
Return to the same scenes the next day and three days later. Keep only the combinations that still hesitate, so repetition targets a real need.
Questions people ask
- What is the difference between i and till?
- I generally describes a position within a place; till expresses movement towards a destination.
- Why is it på jobbet?
- It is an idiomatic combination. Places understood as activities often take på and are best learnt in chunks.
- How should I memorise exceptions?
- Attach each one to a sentence and an image rather than an isolated translation.
