The short answer
The Swedish imperative usually comes from the verb stem: tala stays tala, läser gives läs and skriver gives skriv. It has no subject pronoun. Practise through recipes, directions and instructions rather than isolated lists.
Remove the subject and find the form
Turn du öppnar dörren into öppna dörren. With a group-two verb such as läsa, remove the present ending and use läs. Check frequent irregular forms such as var and gör.
The four Swedish verb-group exercises provide the stems on which imperatives are built.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Vänta här. | Wait here. | |
| Läs instruktionen först. | Read the instructions first. |
Three training scenes
Give five-step directions, dictate a very short recipe, then explain how to use an app. Each scene demands different verbs and a logical sequence.
Contrast a direct instruction with an impersonal rule using the Swedish -s passive: stäng dörren versus dörren stängs klockan sex.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Gå rakt fram och sväng vänster. | Go straight ahead and turn left. | |
| Blanda och vänta i fem minuter. | Mix and wait for five minutes. |
Soften a request
An imperative is not automatically rude, but context matters. Add gärna, tack or a question with kan du when asking somebody for a genuine favour.
Record your instructions and follow them yourself. If a step is missing or ambiguous, the language is not precise enough yet.
The next-day test
The following day, give the same instructions without notes. Keep only the verbs whose imperative form does not return immediately.
