The short answer
Use the Swedish preterite with a named, completed past time: jag läste boken i går. Use the perfect for experience or a present result when no finished past time is stated: jag har läst boken. Mark the time expression first, then choose the tense.
Sort by time marker
Divide cards into two piles. I går, förra året and klockan tre call for the preterite. Redan, ännu, någonsin and no date often favour the perfect.
Check the forms in the Swedish perfect-tense reference, then return to choosing between the tenses.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Jag såg filmen i går. | I saw the film yesterday. | |
| Jag har sett filmen. | I have seen the film. | Experience with no stated time. |
One fact, two intentions
Write a pair for the same event. Jag bodde i Uppsala 2024 tells a dated story; Jag har bott i Uppsala presents relevant experience. Explain aloud what the listener learns from each.
The Swedish verb-group drills secure the supine forms before you add this tense distinction.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Har du varit i Kiruna? | Have you been to Kiruna? | |
| När var du där? | When were you there? | Once a time is requested, the conversation moves to the preterite. |
From experience question to story
Open with a perfect-tense experience question, then switch to the preterite as soon as a date enters the answer. This is how a natural conversation commonly unfolds.
Add negation from the inte exercise set: jag har inte sett den and jag såg den inte i går.
Correct without translating English
English tense choice is a useful clue, but Swedish time markers should decide the answer. Look for the present relevance and the finished time frame.
Store each corrected error as a minimal pair. The contrast then becomes visible and reusable.
