BIFF exercises that make Swedish word order automatic

Knowing what BIFF stands for is not the same as using it. This short exercise sequence trains inte inside real Swedish subordinate clauses.

The short answer

Train BIFF in pairs. Write a main clause, turn it into a subordinate clause with att, eftersom or om, then move inte in front of the finite verb. Ten short corrected pairs build a stronger reflex than another page of explanation.

Start with one visible contrast

Begin with Jag kommer inte i morgon. Add hon säger att and rebuild it as Hon säger att jag inte kommer i morgon. Almost everything stays put, so the movement of inte is easy to see.

Check the full BIFF reference once, then cover it. The aim is to react to att, om and eftersom, not to recite a definition.

Jag vet att hon inte kommer.I know she is not coming.Att opens the subordinate clause.
Om du inte förstår, fråga.If you do not understand, ask.A compact pattern for practising om.

Three exercise types in sequence

First reorder five word groups. Next transform main clauses into subordinate clauses. Finally write two true reasons with eftersom. Personal meaning forces grammar and message to work together.

On the following day, mix these with main-clause inte exercises. Switching between the two patterns is what creates the reflex.

Correct with two colours

Mark the subordinating word in one colour and the finite verb in another. Inte belongs before the second marker. With two verbs, it still precedes the finite one: att jag inte kan komma.

Read every corrected sentence at normal speed. Then continue with perfect versus preterite exercises, where BIFF still applies.

A five-minute test

Write five openings: Jag tror att, Hon säger att, Eftersom, Om and När. Complete each with a negative clause and delay correction until the set is finished.

A repeated mistake tells you what to drill. A correct but slow answer calls for spoken repetition rather than more theory.

Questions people ask

What does BIFF stand for?
I bisats kommer inte före det finita verbet: in a subordinate clause, inte comes before the finite verb.
Does BIFF only apply to inte?
No. Clause adverbs such as aldrig, ofta, alltid and kanske follow the same position rule.
How many sentences should I practise?
Ten carefully corrected pairs per session is enough. Repeat across several days instead of doing fifty at once.
