Tack, ursäkta, förlåt: Swedish politeness without please

Swedish has no everyday word for please, which makes newcomers sound abrupt while they hunt for one. The politeness is real, it just lives in other words. Here is where it actually sits.

The short answer

There is no single Swedish word for please. Politeness is carried by tack, by the verb form you choose, and by two words that English collapses into one: ursäkta gets attention or squeezes past somebody, förlåt apologises for something you did. Tack does the work of please as well as thank you, which is why jag skulle vilja ha en kaffe, tack sounds courteous and en kaffe does not. Say tack often, keep ursäkta for interrupting and förlåt for apologising, and answer a compliment or an offer with the phrase Swedes actually use rather than a translated one.

The missing word, and what replaces it

Snälla exists and it is not the everyday please. It carries pleading: a child asking for one more biscuit, or an adult who really needs a favour. Using it at a counter sounds like you are begging for the coffee.

What carries the politeness instead is the shape of the request. Kan jag få is neutral and fine, skulle jag kunna få is softer, and jag skulle vilja ha is the courteous form you would use in an office or with a stranger. Add tack at the end and you have covered everything English does with please.

The register that surprises French speakers most is the absence of vouvoiement. Everybody is du, including the doctor, the manager and the person at the tax office. Politeness is not built from distance here, it is built from the words above.

Jag skulle vilja ha en kaffe, tack.I'd like a coffee, please. The courteous default at any counter.
Kan jag få räkningen, tack? Can I have the bill, please?Restaurant. Notan also works for the bill.
Skulle jag kunna få hjälp med det här?Could I get some help with this?Softest form. Use it when you are asking for real effort.
Snälla, kan du hjälpa mig? Please, can you help me?Genuine pleading only. Not for a coffee.

Ursäkta and förlåt are not interchangeable

Ursäkta opens something: you want attention, you need to pass, you are about to interrupt. Förlåt closes something: you did a thing and you are sorry for it.

Say förlåt to a stranger you are approaching with a question and you sound as though you have already done them harm. Say ursäkta after stepping on somebody's foot and you sound like you are about to ask them a question. Both are understood, but both land oddly, and the correction takes ten seconds to learn.

Which verb you build the request on matters as much as these two words, and the modals decide the tone. There is a third one for bumping into somebody on a bus: oj, förlåt is what Swedes actually say, and ursäkta mig is the version for squeezing out of a crowded carriage before your stop.

Ursäkta, får jag komma förbi?Excuse me, may I get past?On a bus, in a shop aisle, in a queue.
Ursäkta, har du en minut?Excuse me, do you have a minute?Approaching a colleague or a stranger.
Förlåt, det var mitt fel.Sorry, that was my fault.A real apology. Short, and Swedes leave it there.
Oj, förlåt!Oops, sorry!Bumping into somebody. The oj does half the work.

Tack does more jobs than thank you

Tack is thank you, please, yes please and goodbye-ish, depending on where it lands in the sentence. Tack så mycket and tusen tack raise it, and tack ska du ha is the warm spoken version.

Two answers matter. Ja tack and nej tack are how you accept or decline anything offered, and a bare ja or nej sounds blunt in a way that is easy to miss. When somebody thanks you, the reply is varsågod, or ingen fara when the thing was trivial.

There is also a ritual that has no English equivalent. Tack för maten is said to whoever cooked, by adults and children alike, and skipping it is noticed. Tack för senast is said to somebody the next time you meet after they hosted you, even weeks later, and it is one of those phrases that makes you sound like you have been here a while.

Ja tack, gärna.Yes please, I'd like that.Accepting coffee, help, an invitation.
Nej tack, det är bra.No thank you, I'm fine.Declining without any further explanation.
Tack för maten!Thank you for the food!Said to the cook at the end of a meal. Always.
Tack för senast! Thanks for last time! The next time you see somebody who hosted you.

The small talk that is not small

Hur är läget? and hur mår du? are not the same question. The first is casual and expects a short answer. The second is a real enquiry into how you are, and a Swede who asks it is prepared to hear something true, which is why answering fine, and you? by reflex can end the conversation you were being offered.

Compliments get accepted rather than deflected: tack is the whole answer. Deflecting with the French reflex of denying the compliment reads as awkward rather than modest.

And the goodbye has layers. Hej då is standard, vi hörs is see you when contact will be by phone or message, vi ses is see you when you will meet, and ha det så bra is the warm one you can use with anyone, including the cashier.

Hur är läget? How's it going?Casual. Bara bra, tack is a complete answer.
Hur mår du?How are you?A real question. Expect a real answer, and give one.
Ha det så bra!Have a good one!Leaving anywhere. Works with strangers.
Vi hörs!We'll speak soon!Ending a call or a chat thread.

Where the politeness actually gets decided

In practice, courtesy in Sweden is measured less by the words than by two habits. You keep your turn short, and you do not make somebody else deal with your problem without asking first.

The guide to Swedish greetings places hej, vi ses and ha det bra around these markers without inventing a formal register that the exchange does not need.

That is why a long apologetic preamble before a question lands worse than the question itself. Ursäkta, vet du var …? is complete, and the rest of that exchange is here. Adding three sentences of apology for existing makes the exchange harder, not more polite.

The same applies to the switch to English. Being asked to slow down is not impolite here, and it is a much better outcome than the whole exchange moving into English, which is the pattern worth interrupting early.

Kan du prata lite långsammare?Could you speak a bit more slowly?Perfectly polite. Say it before you are lost.
Jag förstår inte riktigt.I don't quite understand.Better than nodding.
Får jag fråga en sak?May I ask you something?Opens a question without a preamble.
Tack för hjälpen! Thanks for your help!Closes almost any counter exchange.

Questions people ask

How do you say please in Swedish?
There is no everyday equivalent. Snälla exists but carries pleading, so it sounds strange at a counter. Politeness comes from the request form plus tack: jag skulle vilja ha en kaffe, tack, or kan jag få räkningen, tack. Tack at the end of a request does the work please does in English.
What is the difference between ursäkta and förlåt?
Ursäkta opens an interaction: getting attention, passing somebody, interrupting. Förlåt apologises for something you have done. Using förlåt to start a question makes it sound as though you have already harmed the person.
Do Swedes use a formal you?
No, in ordinary life everybody is du, including doctors, managers and civil servants. The formal ni exists but sounds dated or oddly distant to most people under sixty. Courtesy is carried by the words above rather than by a pronoun.
What do I answer when somebody says tack?
Varsågod is the standard reply, and ingen fara or det var så lite works when the favour was small. If you are handing something over, varsågod also means here you are.
What is tack för senast?
A phrase said to somebody the next time you meet after they hosted you or organised something, even several weeks later. It has no English equivalent, and using it correctly is one of the quickest ways to sound settled rather than new.
