The short answer
UHR states it plainly: Migrationsverket decides who may sit the citizenship test. You get access to registration only after Migrationsverket sends you a letter about it, and your result then goes back to Migrationsverket automatically. As of 12 September 2026 registration is closed and UHR says information about the next sitting and the opening of registration will come during the autumn. So the useful question before the letter arrives is not how to register, it is whether the knowledge requirement applies to you at all and whether you can already show the knowledge another way.
The gate, in one sentence from UHR
UHR's own wording is that Migrationsverket decides who may write the test. You only get login access to registration if you have received a letter from Migrationsverket about it. The result is then transferred to Migrationsverket without you doing anything.
This single fact reorders the whole subject. Preparation is not a queue you join by paying. It is something you do while you wait to be called, and being called depends on a case that somebody else is handling. The division of labour is worth learning once: UHR decides the result, Migrationsverket decides the file.
As of 12 September 2026, UHR's page says registration is closed and it is not possible to register, and that information about when registration opens for the next sitting will come. Not a delay, not a soft opening: closed.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| anmälan är stängd | registration is closed | The line on UHR's page today. Worth recognising so you do not think you missed a button. |
| Det är Migrationsverket som avgör vem som får skriva provet. | It is Migrationsverket that decides who may sit the test. | UHR's own sentence. Quote it back to anyone selling you a place. |
| ett brev från Migrationsverket | a letter from Migrationsverket | The document that opens registration. Keep the reference number on it. |
| Jag har fått ett brev om medborgarskapsprovet. | I have received a letter about the citizenship test. | Opening line if you call to ask what to do next. |
Three filters before the letter matters
Age. The knowledge requirements apply from 16 up to and including 66. Below and above, they do not apply. The age counted is the one at the moment your file is examined, not when you applied, which is a real difference in a queue measured in hundreds of days.
Whether you already qualify another way. A passing grade in civics, or in basic social orientation subjects, from the final year of grundskola, from anpassade grundskola, from the last two years of specialskola, from gymnasieskola or from komvux, counts as showing the civics knowledge. Roughly 13 per cent of applicants were expected to be in that position, in the government's own estimate.
Exemption. Where a disability or other personal circumstance makes it unreasonable to require you to show the knowledge, the law allows an exemption that can be total or partial. The circumstance has to be lasting, the evidence is yours to provide, and Migrationsverket decides it.
Run those three filters and a large part of the audience buying quiz subscriptions turns out not to need the test at all. That is not an argument against preparing. It is an argument for finding out first.
What the test looks like, and what is still blank
What UHR publishes: the test is in Swedish, written on paper, made of multiple-choice questions with one correct answer. It publishes five example questions on its own page, which are worth reading at the source rather than in somebody's rewrite.
The first sitting took place on 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö, with around a thousand people and about sixty questions with four options each. SVT reported that candidates found the division of powers between the state and the kommuner hard, along with nineteenth century history.
What UHR has not published, as of 12 September 2026: the pass mark, the length of a sitting, the number of questions for the next sittings, their dates, their cities, and the fee for any sitting before 2027. The regulation fixes 2 000 kronor per sitting with effect from 2027. The August sitting was free. The whole shape of the exam is in the eleven subject areas the regulation names, not in a rumour about timing.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| flervalsfrågor | multiple-choice questions | The format word UHR uses. |
| provtillfälle | a sitting, an occasion on which the test is held | The word to search on uhr.se for the next date. |
| anmälningsavgift | registration fee | The word on UHR's page that currently says the information is coming. |
What to do while registration is closed
Do the language, because the language is the actual barrier. The test is written in Swedish at what the law calls funktionell nivå, and the study material is a Swedish book. A quiz translated into eleven languages teaches you to recognise an answer; it does not get you through a paper written in Swedish.
If you are somewhere around A2, reading the official material is a specific skill and it can be trained. That work is not wasted whatever UHR announces in October, and it fits inside a revision plan for the fourteen chapters that does not depend on a sitting date.
And separate the two exams in your head, because they are not the same thing and they do not arrive at the same time. Civics now, Swedish later, with different authorities behind them.
What we are not
We are not affiliated with UHR, Skolverket or Migrationsverket. We cannot register you, we cannot tell you whether a letter is coming, and we cannot tell you whether you meet the requirements. Migrationsverket decides individual cases and nobody else does.
Nothing here is a promise that you will pass. There is no pass mark to pass yet, which is the cleanest possible reason to distrust any site that sells you one.
What we can do is teach the Swedish that the test is written in, and keep every date on this page tied to the page it came from, with the date that page was last updated.

Questions people ask
- How do I register for the medborgarskapsprov?
- You cannot register on your own initiative. UHR opens registration only to people who have received a letter about the test from Migrationsverket, which decides who may sit it. As of 12 September 2026 registration is closed and UHR says information about the next opening will come during the autumn.
- When is the next sitting of the citizenship test?
- Not announced. UHR says information about the next sitting in civics will be published on uhr.se during the autumn of 2026. Any specific date circulating now comes from somewhere other than UHR.
- Can I sit the test before I apply for citizenship?
- No, because access to registration depends on a letter from Migrationsverket in connection with a case. That is the difference between this test and a language exam you can book yourself.
- Who does not have to sit the civics test?
- People outside the 16 to 66 bracket at the time their file is examined, people who can show the civics knowledge through a passing grade in civics or basic social orientation from the Swedish school system, and people granted an exemption because a lasting disability or personal circumstance makes the requirement unreasonable.
- What happens to my result?
- UHR transfers it to Migrationsverket automatically. You do not send anything in yourself, and the decision on your citizenship file remains Migrationsverket's.
- Does the test cost anything?
- The regulation sets 2 000 kronor per sitting, applying from 2027, with an exemption for stateless people holding refugee status or a Swedish travel document. The sitting of 15 August 2026 was free, and UHR has published no fee for any sitting before 2027.
