The short answer
Familj means family. Föräldrar means parents, barn children, syskon siblings, partner partner and släkting a relative. Barn and syskon are especially useful because these Swedish words do not specify gender, and their plural forms are easy to reuse.
Core family words without forced translation
Learn en mamma, en pappa, en förälder, ett barn, ett syskon, en partner. Use the word that fits the person rather than building a complete imaginary family tree.
Then say where people live with Swedish home vocabulary.

Extended family and compound words
Mormor is your mother's mother and farmor your father's mother. The same system gives morfar and farfar. Svärmor and svärfar are parents-in-law.

Ask about family without becoming intrusive
Har du familj här? asks whether somebody has family nearby without assuming marriage or children. Let the other person introduce more specific words.
