The short answer
On 3 September 2026, the Swedish government asked Medlingsinstitutet to analyse the dispute involving IF Metall and Tesla. The industrial action began in October 2023 and ended in August 2026 after almost three years. A report due by 31 May 2027 may recommend changes, but the assignment does not itself alter collective agreements or strike law.
Why the dispute was unusual
The conflict began after the parties did not reach a collective agreement for workers in the company's Swedish service workshops.
It involved strikes, blockades, sympathy action and several legal disputes over almost three years.
For the practical background, read what a kollektivavtal covers.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Finns det kollektivavtal? | Is there a collective agreement? | |
| Vad gäller på min arbetsplats? | What rules apply at my workplace? |
What Medlingsinstitutet must do
The authority will describe the background, development and conclusion of the dispute.
It will assess possible significance for the Swedish labour-market model, including in relation to global companies.
Any recommendations must respect EU law, international obligations and the autonomy of labour-market parties.
What has not changed
The analysis does not impose a collective agreement on every employer or replace an individual employment contract.
Check the rules in your sector, the legal employer and the agreements that actually cover your position.
Separate a collective conflict from an individual disagreement about pay, scheduling or dismissal.
Records worth keeping
Retain the contract, schedules, payslips, union messages and decisions that apply directly to you.
Ask whether an answer comes from the employer, union or public authority before acting on it.
