The short answer
For family members of a person studying in Sweden, two targeted rules change on 1 October 2026: comprehensive health insurance is required when the family member will stay for no more than one year, and the parent of a child who is not the couple's joint child must also be that child's legal guardian. The maintenance requirement for students' families remains unchanged.
The student case has its own summary
The wider family immigration reform does not map mechanically onto students. Migrationsverket therefore published a separate notice on 17 September for people applying for, or already holding, a study permit.
Two new requirements may affect accompanying family members from 1 October. Check the study route itself rather than relying on a general family reunification summary.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| medföljande familjemedlem | accompanying family member | The term used for a relative linked to the student's permit. |
| uppehållstillstånd för studier | residence permit for studies | The principal permit. |
A stay of one year or less needs insurance
A family member staying in Sweden for no more than one year must have comprehensive health insurance. Migrationsverket says it must cover medical treatment and hospital care in Sweden.
An ordinary travel policy is not automatically sufficient. The certificate should show the insured person, dates, territory and covered care without forcing the case officer to infer them.
For a longer intended stay, do not assume health disappears from the process. Population registration and other conditions may become relevant; this published rule specifically targets stays of up to one year.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| heltäckande sjukförsäkring | comprehensive health insurance | Required for certain stays lasting no more than one year. |
| sjukhusvård | hospital care | One element the policy must cover. |
A parent must also be the legal guardian
If a child is not the joint child of the student and accompanying partner, the child's parent must also be the legal guardian. Parenthood and legal guardianship are not identical in every country's documents.
Prepare evidence of guardianship and any required translation. Where another legal guardian exists, consent or a relevant decision may also be needed for the individual case.
The word to recognise is vårdnadshavare: the person carrying legal responsibility for the child, not merely a parent in everyday speech.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| vårdnadshavare | legal guardian | The legal status the application must establish. |
| gemensamt barn | joint child | The distinction used by the new rule. |
What stays the same
The maintenance requirement for students' family members does not change. Sufficient funds must still be shown for each family member throughout the permit period, for both first applications and extensions.
Make three columns: intended duration, health coverage and guardianship documents. Check them separately for each applicant.
For the broader changes, read the full family rules summary. Keep the filing receipt and decision because a rule starting on 1 October only makes sense against the case timeline.
If the student also attends language classes, the new SFI syllabuses for 2027 prevent a second date mix-up. The September establishment benefits run on a separate claim calendar.
