The short answer
On 4 September 2026, Sweden opened an inquiry into the school subjects svenska and svenska som andraspråk. The investigator must propose either a different division or one subject with two syllabuses, including foundational Swedish for beginners. The report is due on 6 December 2027, so current timetables and assessments do not change yet.
Why the structure is being reviewed
The government notes that enrolment in Swedish as a second language has grown for fifteen years and that about half of those pupils were born in Sweden.
In lower secondary school, roughly 59% of SVA teachers were qualified in 2024/25, compared with about 78% in Swedish.
This school inquiry is separate from the new SFI courses for adults.
| In Swedish | What it means | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Läser mitt barn svenska eller svenska som andraspråk? | Is my child studying Swedish or Swedish as a second language? | |
| Vilken kursplan följer ni? | Which syllabus do you follow? |
Two routes are on the table
The investigator may propose a different way to divide the subjects.
The alternative is a shared subject with two syllabuses, one of them covering foundational Swedish for beginners.
The brief therefore does not announce a merger or set new placement criteria today.
Questions families can ask now
Ask which subject appears in the pupil's plan, what needs the placement is based on and when it is reviewed.
Compare objectives, support and teacher qualifications rather than treating the subject name as a simple ability label.
Prepare three written questions for the next parent-teacher meeting.
The actual timetable
The inquiry reports by 6 December 2027. Consultation and any legislation would come later.
Keep current plans and assessments because they remain the working documents until a new rule takes effect.
